Kindness Inside Therapy
My Approach
Healing Through the Internal Family Systems (IFS) Model
I was raised in a faith tradition that taught many beautiful things, but also communicated the message that people are bad at their core, and any parts of ourselves that we don’t like need to be feared and fought against. I found again and again over time that attempting to get rid of the parts of myself that I did not like did not make them go away, and only further entrenched them. Learning about and then getting trained in Internal Family Systems (or “parts work”) has been hugely influential in shifting from a “getting rid of” perspective to a posture of respect and learning, even for parts that are showing up in challenging ways. This allows for these parts to feel heard and understood for the role they've served, and allows for the parts to soften when they feel ready. For myself and the clients I’ve worked with, practicing internal kindness to all parts of ourselves has been key, and why my practice is called Kindness Inside.
I utilize calm, reflective listening, and asking questions to get to your own innate inner knowing. I’m influenced by Motivational Interviewing, which emphasizes that change will happen when a person is ready, and asking questions and presenting options to assess for readiness for change is more effective than telling someone what to do. I see my role as a guide rather than a director, and my goal is to follow the parts in your system, to gain consent from all parts before moving forward, and to trust your system knows what it needs.
I provide individual therapy to women and gender non conforming adults of color, and a lot of the focus of my work is processing through grief and loss with folks.
Specialty Areas

Grief & Loss
Grief and loss includes the death of people we love, as well as grief and loss associated with any ending- of a home, a relationship, an identity. Making room for grief and all the feelings associated with it allows for us to process through so many things that keep us stuck and weighed down in our lives.

Multiracial Identity
Being multiracial is its own unique experience, and often brings up questions of identity and what it means to show up in our culture and society. Creating a safe space to process through those questions, or simply sharing space with someone who has lived experience with multiracial identity has been important for my clients.

Attachment Work
Attachment theory discusses how our earliest relationships with our caregivers influences all relationship dynamics for us moving forward. Attachment work means recognizing those dynamics and healing attachment wounds. IFS is attachment theory taken inside ourselves.

Life Transitions
Moving from a known place to an unknown place can be scary and overwhelming. Whether it is a transition of place, relationship, identity, age, etc, getting support can help make navigating the complex feelings associated with the transition feel less daunting and more manageable.

Somatics
Somatics means body- which is where emotions, trauma, and grief (all of our parts) are held. I believe healing has to include the body, so I make sure checking in with the body and including the body is incorporated into the work I do.

Religious Trauma
Healing from environments of high control and shame involves reworking how we see all aspects of our lives- including our self concept, how we engage in relationships, sexuality, parenting, the good/bad binary- to name a few. It can feel confusing and includes lots of grief, and the healing process is a journey that I believe cannot be taken alone.
"Healing is not linear; grief has no deadline; you are not broken; your ancestors have carried you through anxiety and worry; your body remembers and it is possible to feel that way again."
